In southeast Ireland in the early 1950s, Eilis Lacey is one among many of her generation who must leave home to find work in America. As she begins to settle into her new life and to fall in love, news from home calls her back, opening new possibilities that conflict deeply with the life she has left behind in Brooklyn.
